Alan has been with the Bogs for three years, but has been playing violin since he was six. He also enjoys playing piano, skateboarding, snowboarding, wakeboarding, drawing, painting and hanging with his family and friends.
Benson was born in Arizona. He began studying violin when he moved to the DC area (in fourth grade). He is one of the original members of the Bog Band.
Brendan has been a student of classical violin since he first sat in the choir loft watching Pete Moss (Mitch Fanning) play. After "Twinkle Twinkle" and a bit of Mozart, his Irish genes kicked in and he started playing the Irish tunes (fueled by Fiddle Week in Donegal and some local pub sessions). With his red hair and sense of humor, Brendan stands out in a crowd (and is a magnet for mischief:-) When not fiddling, he may be training in the martial arts, skating down a half-pipe or at the pool with his earphones firmly in place listening to a wild mix of music always at high volume.
Caitlin has been studying violin for eight years and playing Irish fiddle for three. She is so taken with Irish music that she is researching the regional differences in fiddling styles in Ireland. When not doing homework, Caitlin loves hanging out with her Bog pals and playing up a storm (at gigs or sessions, it's all fun). She has been to Ireland twice to study with the fiddle masters in Glencolumbkille, and she looks forward to more trips across the pond. Her favorite tunes are reels and aires. When not doing homework or playing with the Bogs, Caitlin participates in a string quartet, her school's pit orchestra and drama club -- even appearing as the Fiddler in their production of “Fiddler on the Roof”.
Casey has been playing violin for more than six years. He is one of the original members of the Bog Band and still enjoys Irish music. When he's not playing, Casey can be found on his school's soccer field, basketball court or baseball field. He also enjoys backpacking, cooking, woodworking and hanging with Tarra, his labradoodle.
Douglas - great guitar backup in the studio & onstage.
Erika has been fiddling and dancing for more than half her life (about dancing since first grade, fiddling since second). Her cello career began in fifth grade when her school orchestra's only cello player moved. She loves being with the Bogs because it gives her a chance to fiddle, dance and play cello. By the time you read this, Erika hopes to have earned the right to wear an Irish solo dress (she has to have one more first place at a feis - which is an Irish dance competition). She also sings, ice skates and takes trapeze lessons, and in her "spare time" does homework and goes to school.
Gabe has been playing fiddle for six years and is one of the original members of the Bog Band (when it was the Bog Boys). It was Gabe's interest in his Irish heritage that led him to ask "Pete" (Mitch) about studying Irish music -- the result was the Bog Boys. Outside of the Bogs, he enjoys skateboarding, mountain biking, playing guitar, tennis, travel and ultimate Frisbee.
Gardi is one of the original Bog Band members. He still can't believe that people pay him to play music. Gardi loves swimming, basketball, acting and generally joking around. He is happiest if people are laughing. Some of his best memories involve squirrels and music lessons with Pete (Mitch) – don't ask.
Jamie loves to play fiddle anywhere and at anytime - a metro stop, home, school, Ireland - it's all good. When not fiddling, he keeps busy singing, acting, playing sports and drawing. . . although, if he is totally deprived of down time, he is a serious hazard to those around him! He enjoys a variety of music ranging from Liz Carroll and John Doyle to the Dave Matthews Band.
Mark is the quiet fiddler who loves wearing tie-dye shirts. Outside the Bog band, Mark likes skiing, ultimate Frisbee and video games. Although he admits, "Fiddling is the best!"
Disclaimer: Huge portions (if not all) of the following may be totally fictitious:: Michael was born in Texas where he learned the ways of life from the circus his parents worked with. Eventually, his family settled in DC where his father became a psychiatrist for the criminally insane, and his mother started a butcher shop specializing in naturally raised meat. One day, his mother left a goat skin lying around, and Michael nailed it to the window frame and began making lovely drumming music. Eventually, an Irishman told him he should try bodhran. After catching and skinning his own goat, Michael made his own drum. He started following an up and coming next-gen Irish fiddle group. Not only did they not chase him off, they actually let him stay, so now he plays bodhran for the Bog Band (but he will never forget his Texan circus roots).
Oliver loves Irish fiddling almost as much as playing soccer. He has been with the band for about three years, and is currently the youngest member. He especially likes Michael Coleman tunes as well as the great fiddle music from bands like Altan and Leahy, but listens to many other kinds of music.
Oran - great guitar backup in the studio & onstage.
Patrick is the flute player of the Bog Band. He began playing whistle when he was around 11, then "graduated" to flute. He has studied with flute players on both sides of the pond. In America: Laura Byrne, John Skelton and Elise Kress; and Irish players: Eamonn Cotter and Marcus Hearnon. However, he credits most of his playing to the local musicians in the D.C. area. Most recently, he acquired and is learning to play the uilleann pipes.
Pete Moss - (aka Mitch Fanning) violin and fiddle teacher, leader of the group, especially when he's not following...
Quinn loves playing fiddle and thinks that anyone who is at all interested should give it a try. He describes himself as an optimist and the animated one in the band. He loves feeling good, playing music, and chocolate. Quinn is also a competitive ice dancer. He and his partner have done many competitions including the Junior Nationals.
Robert has been playing violin and fiddle since fourth grade. He is one of the original members of the Bog Band. He also plays the guitar. When he has time, Robert also enjoys skateboarding, surfing, and biking.
Sam has been playing fiddle for more than ten years (five of them with "Pete Moss" aka Mitch Fanning). He has studied fiddle in County Donegal. When not with the Bogs, Sam is in a band at his school and is a four-sport athlete.
Samantha - or Sam - first met "Pete Moss" about six years ago. She began with classical music, but once she started with the Irish tunes, classical has taken a back seat (don't tell Mitch). She has studied with Brendan Mulvihill and Brian Conway. She has recently acquired a set of uilleann pipes and is studying with local piper and harpist, Rick Kemper. Apart from playing Irish music, Sami likes to go on adventures, swim in rivers and protect the environment.
Wren - a grade older, and wiser, and a heart for the tunes to match.
